This specimen was lot 13247 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $999. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra, 1672. NGC EF--Details, Mount Removed. Clement X (1670-76). Port of the Civitavecchia, home of the Papal fleet. Toned." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1672 only. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 26.45 g, silver, .917 fine.
