This specimen was lot 1179 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. 1/2 Piastra, ND (1708)-VIII. Clement XI (1700-21). NGC AU-55. Sharply struck and lightly toned." This date is a one year type struck in 1708. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler and was superseded by the scudo after 1740.
