Papal St Dav-4092 rev Tom F.jpg

Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue is among the more available. This type was issued 1682 for Innocent XI in two varieties, with (shown here) and without seraph on the reverse (Dav-4092). The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.
