Papal States (1677) piastra Dav-4088
This specimen was lot 40638 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Piastra, Year 2 (1677). PCGS AU-53 Secure Holder. Innocent XI (1676-89). Arms; Reverse: St. Peter's Basilica. Very strong definition and pleasing to the eye." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This issue was issued 1677 only. The piastra was the Italian equivalent of the German thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 26.45 g, silver, .917 fine.
