Sincona sale 46, lot 630. Note the crossed hands mintmark on the obverse
The first specimen was lot 30792 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $940. The catalog description[1] noted, "Papal States. Paolo (Paul) III gold Scudo d'oro ND (1534-49), Rome mint, AU55 NGC. A better example of the type than you will usually find. Very full flan with all aspects of the design present, and relatively good detail on the figure of Paul on the reverse. Very slight striking weakness on the obverse in the lower-left quarter, but still a fairly strong strike overall." The third specimen was lot 630 in Sincona sale 46 (Zurich, May 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[2] noted,
"ITALIEN, Vatikan - Kirchenstaat, Paul III. 1534-1549. Scudo doro o. J. Gutes sehr schön. (Papal States, Paul III, 1534-49, undated gold scudo. Good very fine.)"
The scudo d'oro started out matching the gold duct but soon shrank in weight and fineness to match the German goldgulden. Friedberg records the first scudo d'oro from this reign.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.36 g, .917 fine gold, the third specimen 3.39 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-65, the first specimen: Berman-903; the third specimen Ber-904.
