PCGS 8209 - 1842-C $5 Large Date
1842-C Half Eagle (Large Date); Mintage: 23,589 of 28,154 total for the year
The year 1842 was a transitional period for Charlotte Half Eagles. A small part of the mintage (4,595) comprised of the Small Date variety, along the lines of the 1840 and 1841 dates. Part-way through the year, the mint incorporated the Large Date design, yet retaining the small lettering on the reverse. The Small Date variety is the rarest coin in the Half Eagle series, and the 2nd rarest coin produced by the Charlotte mint. As for the Large Date variety, although not as rare as the its Small Date cousin, it is a very scarce coin in its own right, and is quite rare to find problem-free.
NOTE: The reverse lettering wasn't enlarged until after 1843.
