Newfoundland SB819-20233r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20233 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "CANADA. Newfoundland. 50 Cents, 1872-H. Heaton Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-61. VERY SCARCE. Seldom available in Mint State, this piece bears pale-argent tone over lustrous fields upon which are set sharp devices." This type was struck at Heaton and London 1870-1900 for Newfoundland and is slightly heavier than the contemporary Canadian fifty cents. Struck in small numbers and exposed to long circulation, it is rare in nice condition. This specimen realized a little over half the catalog value. Proofs exist.

Recorded mintage: 48,000.

Specification: 11.78 g, .925 fine silver, .350 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-6.
