Naples 1686 tari rev Ponterio 169-10510.jpg

This specimen was lot 10510 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $329. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples & Sicily. Tari, 1686-AGA. Charles II (1665-1700). Dark toned. NGC MS-62. From the Demarete Collection." The listings in the SCWC for Naples and Sicily are very sketchy and do not include this coin. The SCWC does note that 12 carlini = six tari = one piastra, where a piastra is roughly equal to a peso. Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown, only to be reconquered by them in the 1730's.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-104; MIR-29815.
