This specimen was lot 23307 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "MOZAMBIQUE. Real, 1853. Maria II. NGC MS-63 Brown. A pleasing, diminutive issue that is not often encountered in a condition so choice as the present specimen. Exceeded in the NGC census by just one example, this piece will assuredly attract a good deal of interest from those who collect Portuguese or colonial issues." Portuguese issues for her colonies was rather scanty in the nineteenth century. In 1853, one, two, five, ten and twenty réis were issued for Mozambique; as the five, ten and twenty réis matched the regular homeland series they are listed under Portugal.
