This specimen was lot 1172 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Modena. Tallero, 1796. Ercole III d'Este (1780-96). NGC AU-53. Lustrous with light even toning." The Este family managed to remain Dukes of Modena from the sixteenth century until the coming of Napoleon in 1796. This type is listed for 1795-96. At the time, 6 denari = 1 sesino, 2 sesini = 1 soldo, 20 soldi = 1 lira, 12 lire = 1 tallero or scudo.
