The first specimen was lot 921 in Ponterio sale 164 (New York, January 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1904-MoM. Tied for Finest Certified of Type By NGC. Tied for finest known. Mintage of only 1,415 pieces. A superb example. Sharply struck with satin surfaces. NGC MS-67." The second specimen was lot 40287 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Pesos, 1904-MoM. NGC MS-67. Tied for Finest Certified of Type By NGC Fr-139; Tied for finest known. Mintage of only 1,415 pieces. A superb example. Sharply struck with satin surfaces." The two offerings may be of the same coin; both obverse images show a faint scuff above the left pan of the scale. This type was struck at Mexico City 1870-1905. The type is also recorded from Culiacan, Durango, Guanajuato, Alamos, Chihuahua, Hermosillo and Zacatecas but Mexico City is by far the most prolific issuer. The 1904MoM is considered a common date.

Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,415.

Specification: 8.46 g, .875 fine gold, .238 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-119; KM-412.6.
