the Stack's Bowers 2020 NYINC sale, lot 21190
Mexico SB120-21190r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21190 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 20 Pesos, 1898-Cn M. Culiacan Mint. NGC Unc Details--Cleaned. A difficult and SCARCE date to encounter, this piece does exhibit some evidence of light cleaning, but otherwise presents itself with no signs of handling and offering a bold strike. Quite lustrous and pleasing no matter the designation." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Culiacan mint 1870-1905. Although production was substantial, many dates are rare. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare.

Recorded mintage: 1,660.

Specification: 33.84 g, .875 fine gold, .952 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-122; KM-414.2.
