This specimen was lot 25448 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $1,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20 Pesos 1881 Mo-M, Mexico City mint, AU55 NGC. Weakly struck as usual for this date, but limited wear and some remaining luster in the fields. Scarce in this grade." The Mexico City mint struck this type 1870-1905 and was by far the largest producer. An 1881/0 overdate exists but wins no premium.

Recorded mintage: 11,000.

Specification: 33.84 g, .875 fine gold, .952 troy oz AGW.
