Heritage sale 3073, lot 31597
Mexico H3073-31597r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31597 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 20 Pesos 1878-Cn MS61 NGC, Culiacan mint. Slightly soft strike and a few insignificant contact marks as is often found for this issue, but still quite attractive with good luster. The first we have handled of this date." This specimen is one of a series struck at the Culiacan mint 1870-1905. Although production was substantial, many dates are rare. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare. Assayer G is listed for 1876-78.

Recorded mintage: 842.

Specification: 33.84 g, .875 fine gold, .952 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-122, KM 414.2.
