This specimen was lot 25320 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1868Go-YF, MS65 NGC, full glowing mint brilliance with bold details and rich harvest gold toning in the legends, far superior to most seen in the market." We hasten to assure collectors contemplating this series that this date from the Guanajuato mint normally sells for a fraction of the price realized above. The Guanajuato mint issued this type 1825-97 and most dates are readily available. Overdates 1868/7 and 1868/58 are noted.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 g, .903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
