This specimen was lot 21205 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Escudos, 1860-ZsVL. NGC AU-58. EXTREMELY RARE. The finest known of only 3 reported examples of the date. Well struck and lustrous with hints of lovely orange tone on the high points and amongst the devices. Truly an exceptional rarity of the Republican escudos and sure to excite even the most advanced of collectors. A similar example in our NYINC 2011 auction graded NGC AU-55 hammered down at $26,000. Ex: Spink America Auction December 5, 1995, Lot #992. "The Pablo Gerber Senior Collection"." The specimen shown was struck in Zacatecas, which struck four escudos 1860 and 1862 only. Both dates are rare.
