This specimen was lot 30338 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $4,935. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Caps and Rays 8 Reales 1859 Pi-MC AU55 PCGS, San Luis Potosi mint, The rarer plain assayer variety for this very rare assayer/date combination. Borderline Uncirculated with satiny surfaces and subdued mint bloom. Quite attractive for the grade and well struck. Another key issue of the series in unusually appealing preservation. One of the finest known of this very rare date, and certainly the finest offered for public consideration in the past few years. Securing a comparable specimen may not be possible for quite long after this landmark offering." The specimen shown is an 1859Pi-MC eight reales from the San Luis Potosi mint, which struck the type 1827-93. This date is one of several rare dates (1858-60) issued during the War of the Reform. The earlier issues of 1831-48 and later issues of 1861-93 are more available. The San Luis Potosi mint closed in 1895, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold. The SCWC lists also assayer PS which is slightly more available.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
