The specimen shown is an 1858Pi-PS eight reales from the San Luis Potosi mint, which struck the type 1827-93. This date is one of several rare dates (1858-60) issued during the War of the Reform. The earlier issues of 1831-48 and later issues of 1861-93 are more available. The San Luis Potosi mint closed in 1895, having struck most of the silver and copper denominations but never issued gold. The SCWC lists also assayer MC which is scarce but not rare. The first specimen was lot 6444 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $2,587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Potosi. 8 Reales, 1858-PS. Die style of 1857-1858. RARE and one of the finest known. Nice strike. ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The second specimen was lot 11232 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[2] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1858-PiPS. RARE. Die style of 1857-58. Several edge nicks and scratches. NGC EF Details--Damaged."
