Mexico 1850GC 8 escudos rev Stacks 110-1236.jpg
This specimen was lot 1236 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $2,760. The catalog description[1] noted,
"MEXICO. Republic. 8 Escudos, 1850 GC MP. Guadalupe y Calvo. Hand inscribing law book with quill and Liberty Cap. Rv. Bold eagle facing r. with snake in beak. Especially bright yellow gold, likely from an acid bath which has etched the entire surface with microscopic porosity. Most survivors are in VF or lower grades and frequently show flaws, the present coin has no flaws and good rims with just two small edge chips, one on each side. One of these is located below the 1 in the date, on the reverse, the other is located B of REPUBLICA noted for future identification of this coin. Uncirculated. It is not known if the present coin is the example noted in Richard A Long's Gold Coins of the Early Mexican Republic 1823-1873 as being sold privately in 1993 or the example from 1965 with '2 minor rim bruises' which fits with the present coin, or possibly a new example in a similar grade. Regardless this is one of the technically finer examples of this date, mint, and assayer to have crossed the auction block but its surfaces have their challenges."
The specimen shown is one of a series struck 1844-52 at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint. That mint struck all the silver and gold denominations used during the republic, from the ¼ real to the 8 escudos. None are common, tho the gold tends to appear more often than the silver.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 383.6, Fr-71.
