Morton & Eden sale 104, lot 456

The first specimen was struck at the Guadalupe y Calvo mint in 1845. This mint was open 1844-52 and assayer MP is the only one recorded for that mint, which struck all the silver and gold denominations, from the quarter real to the eight escudos. Of the fourteen mints which struck silver pesos, only Catorce and Estado de Mexico are scarcer. This specimen was lot 21738 in Heritage sale 3002 (Long Beach, September 2008) where it sold for $920. "Republic Cap & Ray 8 Reales 1845GC-MP 'Square Tail', NGC. Lustrous, with gray patina and sharply struck eagle. All issues from the Guadalupe y Calvo mint are scarce since its operations were inconsistent, and it operated for only a few years."

The second specimen was lot 6321 in Ponterio sale 155 (Baltimore, November 2010), where it sold for $920. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Guadalupe Y Calvo. 8 Reales, 1845-MP. First die style of 1845-1846. Small rounded cap and square tailed eagle. Light toning, nice strike. Attractive ALMOST UNCIRCULATED."

The third specimen was lot 456 in Morton & Eden sale 104 (London, November 2019), where it sold for £900 (about US$1,394 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "Republic, 8 reales, Guadalupe y Calvo mint, 1845 MP, first die style of 1845-46, with small cap and square-tailed eagle, another similar (DP-GC02a), struck from reverse die in flawed state, generally good very fine."
