Mexico 1821 4 reales rev DSLR.jpg
from Stack's Bowers 2017 NYINC sale, lot 3144
Mexico SB117-3144r.jpg

This specimen displays the standard bust of Ferdinand VII used in Mexico 1816-21. The second specimen was lot 3144 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2017), where it sold for $15,275. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, 1821-Mo JJ. NGC MS-65. Final year of issue in an incredible state. Fully struck with nice definition and detail. Surfaces are very lustrous and covered with handsome cabinet toning with flashing iridescent cobalt blue in the peripheries giving way to dusty rose and apricot hues towards the center and the fields. Only a few light contact marks and no other signs of handling. This is truly a piece which has everything going for it. The finest certified example by three full points. Highly attractive and destined for a collector who appreciates the finest." The four reales is the scarcest of the silver denominations and the "standard bust" of Ferdinand VII is a scarce type for the denomination, even in low grade.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, .896 fine silver, .390 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM-102; Cal-Type 214 #777.
