Aureo sale 238, lot 565
from the Mountain Groan Collection
Mexico 1816Zs 8 reales rev DSLR.jpg
This specimen was lot 565 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 240 euro (about US$381 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1816. Zacatecas. AG. 8 reales. Anv.: Sin punto despues de DEI. Rev.: Punto después de ET. Buen ejemplar para esta ceca. Rara así. MBC+. (Eight reales of 1816, Zacatecas mint, without dot after DEI on obverse, with dot after ET on reverse. Nice example for this mint, rare thus, choice very fine.)"
Alarmed by the outbreak of the war of independence, local officials opened a mint in Zacatecas so that silver ore would not have to be transported over bandit infested mountain trails. This bust type was struck 1813-22 and is rare in nice condition as most were poorly made. It replaced the various provisional types issued 1810-12, likely in response to complaints from Mexico City about the absence of the king's portrait.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cal. 687, KM 111.5.
