This specimen is one of a series minted 1789-90 in Mexico City at the start of the reign of Charles IV. The date is common, tho priced higher by collectors seeking an example of the transitional type (the bust of Charles III appears with the ordinal of Charles IV). Assayer FM is recorded for 1784-1801. The Mexico City mint, opened in 1538, is still in operation.
