Aureo sale 242, lot 209
The specimen shown was lot 209 in Aureo y Calico sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 17,000 € (about US$26,394 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos III (1759-1788). 1765/4. México. MM. 8 escudos. Tipo ´cara de rata´. Sin indicación de valor. Insignificantes marquitas. Muy bella. Brillo original. Rara y más así. S/C-. (Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1765, Mexico City mint, "rat nose" type, without denomination. Tiny nicks, very handsome, original luster, rare, about uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1760-71 and is out of the reach of the average collector. Assayers MM and MF are both listed for 1765 with MF being awarded a premium.
