Mexico H3041-31230r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31230 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $5,170. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1761 Mo-MM AU Details (Bent) NGC, Mexico City mint, Order-on-chest variety. The defect mentioned on the insert is barely noticeable, although the planchet is a tad out-of-round. A coin with good eye-appeal, slight high-point friction evidence defining the technical grade, with considerable subdued luster and fewer than the expected handling marks. Very rare in this preservation despite the insert indication. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type, the first showing the bust of Charles III, was struck 1760-61 only. It is the rarest of the eight escudos featuring king Charles III.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .917 fine gold, .798 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12744, KM 154, Onza-743.
