Mexico 1744-Mo MF escudo
This specimen was lot 3113 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "1744 MF 1 escudo. Mexico City mint. MS-62 (NGC). Similar types as above. Lively lustre on medium orange gold surfaces. Unusually nice for the type. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." All Mexican colonial gold may be considered scarce. This type was struck 1732-47 with the bust of Philip V but despite the lengthy production, it is not common. The SCWC notes an overdate, 1744/3, but assigns it no premium; the type is too rare for most collectors to attempt a date set.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, .917 fine gold, .100 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 3.36 grams, 17.60 mm diameter.
