Mexico c1546 4 reales rev Ponterio 169-11048.jpg

This specimen was lot 11048 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 4 Reales, ND (1546 or 1547). Assayer A (M-A), Alonso del Villaseca. NGC MS-62. A very attractive example of the RARE assayer. Well struck with pleasing toning. Nicely centered." The "Carlos and Johanna" coinage of 1536-55 is complicated and difficult to disentangle as records are sparse and the coins are not dated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.53 g, .931 fine silver, .399 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-18; Nesmith-58; Cal-type-58#79, Cayón no. 3099.
