Heritage sale 3064, lot 31282
Mexico H3064-31282r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31282 in Heritage sale 3064 (Chicago, April 2018), where it sold for $432. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles & Johanna "Late Series" 1/2 Real ND (1542-57) o-o VF25 NGC, Mexico City mint. Antique silver colored throughout with deeply colored recesses and lighter highpoints that sit in attractive contrast. Well-struck as well with a few old marks on both sides, but none that overwhelm the eye. Rare as a type and featuring a highly collectible design, the dotted P/L/S motto appearing on only a few issues in the entire series and the absence of an 'M' for the mintmark being highly unusual as well. Selections from the Isaac Rudman Numismatic Cabinet." The "Carlos and Johanna" coinage of 1536-55 is complicated and difficult to disentangle as records are sparse and the coins are not dated. This odd specimen lacks a complete mintmark or assayer initial.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, .931 fine silver, .050 troy oz ASW; this specimen 18 mm diameter, 1.5 g.

Catalog reference: KM0006.5, Cal-Unlisted, Nesmith-107m, Cayón-unlisted.
