Künker sale 294, lot 3154
This specimen was lot 3154 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,739 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MALTA, JOHANNITERORDEN, Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, 1722-1736. Zecchino 1725, Valletta. GOLD. RR Kl. Randfehler, vorzüglich. (Order of Malta, Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, 1722-1736, zecchino of 1725, Valetta mint. Rare, edge defect, extremely fine.)"
Ferdinand von Hompesch was the last grand master of the knights of Malta before the Order was evicted from the island by Napoleon. The British in turn evicted the French but never returned the island to the Order, retaining it as a colony until 1964. The Order today runs charity hospitals in Europe and is headquartered in Rome. This type is recorded for 1725 only and is rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, .986 fine gold, this specimen 3.43 g.

Catalog reference: Restelli 45, Fr-28, KM 189.
