Magdeburg H3040-29854r.jpg

This specimen was lot 29854 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $3,995. The catalog description[1] noted, "Magdeburg. Archbishopric August von Sachsen-Weissenfels as Administrator Taler 1677 HHF-SM AU Details (Mount Removed) NGC. Featuring the elaborately-designed bust of the provost of Magdeburg and helmeted arms, this large scale Taler presents handsomely-toned, steel-gray patina and intricately-detailed devices that are fully rendered. Moments of original luster can be seen shimmering through from within the protected areas. Despite being previously mounted at 12 o'clock, this lightly-worn selection is scarce in both availability and in type." Separate issues for Magdeburg ended in 1680 when the bishopric was absorbed by Brandenburg. This is the last thaler listed.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM 178, Dav-5507.
