Kaufbeuren in 1547, between Kempten and Biberach, from Putzger's Atlas
This specimen was lot 3961 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,832 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KAUFBEUREN, STADT, Taler 1542, mit Titel Karls V. RR Min. Schrötlingsfehler, etwas berieben, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Kaufbeuren, thaler of 1542, in the name of Charles V. Rare, some planceht cracks, lightly tooled, very fine.)"
The free city of Kaufbeuren issued a series of thalers (Dav-9344 thru Dav-9355) during 1540-52 and then ceased. The last known issue was a ducat of 1730 (Fr-1421). The town was merged into Bavaria in 1803, where it remains.
