Italy 1922-R lira
This specimen was part of lot 23177 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), which sold for $432. The catalog description noted, "ITALY. Minors, Late 19th-Early 20th Century. 20 pieces in lot. An interesting assortment of high grade mid-19th to mid-20th century issues. Lot includes the following: ...1922-R Lira(2).... Close personal inspection is advised and will reward the diligent bidder. A perfect gathering for the beginner to intermediate collector looking to fill out their collections. All are graded and certified by either PCGS and NGC." As Stack's noted for the 1924 lira, "These pieces weren't officially coins (though minted in Rome by government authorization) but 'good for' tokens issued to retire paper money printed during World War One. They are accompanied by nickel two lira and fifty Centesimi. They served the same purpose [as] the French aluminum bronze 'Chamber of Commerce' tokens issued at the same time; to delay acknowledgment of the collapse of the lira." This type was issued in large numbers 1922-24 but mintages for 1926-35 were for presentation only, much like the twenty lire. The SCWC only lists these late issues in uncirculated.
Recorded mintage: 82,266,500.
Specification: 8 g, nickel, 27 mm diameter, with reeded edge.
