This specimen was lot 24609 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $7,637.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Umberto I gold 50 Lire 1884-R, MS61 NGC. The first year of this scarce three-year type, and rarely available on the market with available example always being immediately snapped up and put into collections. The present example, nice for the type, is especially well-struck with sharp segmentation of Umberto's hair curls and smooth mirror-like reflectivity in the fields. Minor ticks limit the grade, but don't have significant [e]ffect on the eye appeal." This rare type is listed for three dates: 1884, 1888 and 1891. It was struck to the standard of a French fifty francs d'or.

Recorded mintage: 2,534.
