Italy 1861-M centesimo
This specimen was part of lot 23177 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), which sold for $432. The catalog description noted, "ITALY. Minors, Late 19th-Early 20th Century. 20 pieces in lot. An interesting assortment of high grade mid-19th to mid-20th century issues. Lot includes the following: 1861-M Centesimo(1), ...Also included are Albanian 1940-R 0.05 Lek(1) and 1939-R 10 Lek(1). Close personal inspection is advised and will reward the diligent bidder. A perfect gathering for the beginner to intermediate collector looking to fill out their collections. All are graded and certified by either PCGS and NGC." This type was struck in large quantities at the Naples, Turin and Milan (shown here) mints 1861-62 and 1867 during the reign of Victorio Emanuele II of Italy. It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French one centime. Gigante comments that the 1867 was struck at Milan with a frozen date 1868 and 1883-92. The next issue of this denomination would be in 1895.
