Honduras SB517-72416r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72416 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $1,175. The catalog description[1] noted, "HONDURAS. 8 Reales, 1860-T-FL. NGC VG-10 BN. KM-21a (listed as 5 known). VERY RARE and possibly the finest known. The only other 2 examples of this date that we have seen both graded AG. Fairly even strike showing good detail, most of the legends and a bold 4 digit date. A real prize and worthy of residing in even the most advanced collection. Provenance: From the Richard Stuart Collection." Honduras issued a series of increasingly debased minor coinage during 1832-53. This peso, theoretically worth eight reales, was issued in copper-lead 1857-61 and normally appears in wretched condition. This very rare date should probably have realized a higher price but is too obscure to draw much interest.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper-lead.

Catalog reference: KM-21a, EL-unlisted.
