This five mark piece was issued from the Darmstadt mint in 1875-76. This type is the most available five mark of Hesse but is less often seen than the five mark of Prussia, Bavaria or Wurttemberg. The next silver five mark issue was in 1888.

Recorded mintage: 290,450.

Specification: 27.77 g, .900 fine silver, .803 troy oz ASW.
