This specimen was lot 10315 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $347. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. 2 Gulden, 1855. NGC AU-58. Toned." This type was struck 1848-49, 1853-56 and is scarce in comparison to its mintage. It succeeded a double gulden of Ludwig II (Dav-704). The two gulden is barely large enough to be considered a crown but is included by tradition.
