Hesse-Darmstadt Stacks Jan15-651r.jpg

This specimen was lot 651 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Hesse-Darmstadt. Taler, 1760. Ludwig VIII (1739-68). NGC EF Details--Obverse Graffiti. VERY RARE. Minor graffiti on obverse field in front of bust that is well hidden by the dark toning. From the Rockaway Collection." The landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt issued numerous thalers in the eighteenth century (Dav-2313 thru -2339) but most are seldom seen. This is the first one we have managed to locate for the Wiki.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rather rare.

Specification: silver.
