Künker sale 335, lot 3819
This specimen was lot 3819 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, Georg I. Ludwig, 1698-1714. Reichstaler 1713, Clausthal. Variante mit Arabesken in der Rückseitenumschrift. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Schöne Patina, kl. Randfehler, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George Louis, 1698-1714, thaler of 1713, Clausthal mint. Variety with arabesques on the reverse. Very rare in this condition, beautiful patina, minor rim nick, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This rare type was struck 1712-14 just prior to the duke's elevation to king of Great Britain and elector of Hannover. A very similar thaler exists (Dav-2067) with the British Order of the Garter added to the reverse. Other thalers for 1713 include Dav-2059, Dav-2060, Dav-2063, Dav-2066.
