Sincona sale 18, lot 1716
This specimen was lot 1716 in Sincona sale 18 (Zurich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 850 (about US$1,120 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"20 Mark 1879. Hamburg Fast vorzüglich-vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Hamburg, twenty mark of 1879, extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1875-84 and 1887-89. Several German states issued gold five mark in 1877 but the denomination was abandoned in favor of a silver five mark, gold being restricted to ten and twenty mark pieces. This date is rare.

Recorded mintage: 104,000.

Specification: 7.96 g, .900 fine gold, .230 troy oz AGW, this specimen 7.95 g.
