This specimen was lot 3640 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,413 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"HAMBURG, STADT, Dukat 1584 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1583 geändert). Unbekannter Münzmeister. Madonna fast v. v. mit dem Kind auf dem Arm, unten der Stadtschild//Madonna fast v. v. mit dem Kind auf dem Arm, unten Schild mit Nesselblatt. GOLD. Von allergrößter Seltenheit. Unikum. Sehr schön. (Germany, city of Hamburg, ducat of 1584/3, unknown mintmaster. Obverse: Madonna and Child over the city arms; reverse: Madonna and Child over shield with nettle leaf. Extremely rare, unique, very fine.)"
This type was minted more or less uninterruptedly from 1497 to 1667. It is still scarce despite nearly two centuries of production. This is a rare date.
