Kunker sale 263, lot 175
This specimen was lot 175 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabruck, June 2015), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$1,938 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Hamburg, STADT Taler 1553 (geprägt 1553-1562). Münzmeister Johann van Collen. Gaed. 299 a var. Überdurchschnittlich erhalten. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Hamburg, thaler of 1553 (struck 1553-62), mintmaster Johann van Collen, Well struck, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Davenport notes this type of 1553 as scarce. It, along with Dav-9216 and -9215, were struck until 1562 with a frozen date.
