Halberstadt in 1547
This specimen was lot 129 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabruck, June 2015), where it sold for €7,500 (about US$9,689 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"STADT Doppelter Reichstaler 1663. Behelmtes Stadtwappen//Der heilige Stephan steht v. v. den Kopf halbl. gewandt, in der Rechten Buch, darauf drei Steine, im linken Arm Palmzweig, unten zu seinen Füßen Wertpunze "2". Von allergrößter Seltenheit. 2. bekanntes Exemplar. Feine Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (Germany, city of Halberstadt, double thaler of 1663, obverse: helmeted arms; reverse: St. Stephen stands with bible and palm frond, with a "2" punched in at his feet. Extremely rare, one of two known. Fine patina, planchet flaws, very fine.)"
The SCWC does not price this type, which was the only double thaler issued by the city.
