Guatemala SB517-72398r.jpg

This peso is a scarce variation on the familiar slouched liberty type struck 1872-79 and 1894-97. It is the second year of the type and is somewhat scarce; the 1872 is slightly tougher. This type superseded the Rafael Carrera type struck 1859-71. The "P" on the reverse is an assayer's initial, not a mintmark. This specimen was lot 72398 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $376. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. Peso, 1873-P. NGC MS-61. Strong strike with full mint luster. Provenance: From the Richard Stuart Collection."

Recorded mintage: 78,000.

Specification: 25 g, .900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 197.1.
