Guatemala 1867-R 16 pesos
This specimen was lot 24460 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $8,225. The catalog description noted, "Republic gold 16 Pesos 1867-R, AU55 NGC. Types as previous. Good strike, much original brilliance and a very attractive piece. When offering the present coin, Freeman Craig described it as Much luster and somewhat prooflike; attractive and with nearly perfect rims and edges, indeed an accurate description of a very flashy specimen. A very rare date with about 12 confirmed examples, this being among the finest known. Ex. Freeman Craig (3/1982, lot 768 for $12,500). From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins." This type is listed for 1867 and 1869 only and is part of a gold series which included one, two, four, five, eight, ten, sixteen and twenty pesos.
