Guatemala 1839-NG MA 8 reales
This specimen was lot 50494 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $529. The catalog description noted, "GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1839-NG MA/BA. NGC AU-55." This type was struck in Guatemala 1824-47 and in Costa Rica in 1831. It is not rare except in the choice condition shown here. Overdates 1839/7 are noted for the date. The type is listed under the Central American Republic. This federation was an attempt to unite all the former Spanish provinces of Central America into one country but collapsed amid recrimination and civil war.
