Aureo sale 238, lot 105
The first specimen was lot 2373 in Aureo y Calico sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 120 euros (about $198 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1817. Guatemala. M. 8 reales. Escasa. MBC-/MBC. (Guatemala eight reales of 1817, scarce, about Very Fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 105 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 220 euro (about US$349 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1817/6. Guatemala. M. 8 reales. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara así. EBC-/EBC. (eight reales of 1817/6, Guatemala mint. Nice, lustrous, rare, about extremely fine.)"
This type was struck in Guatemala 1808 and 1811-21 and is the first Guatemalan peso that can be called common. The 1817/6 overdate is not listed in the SCWC. The 1821 is the date most often encountered. In 1821, Guatemala declared independence from Spain and attached herself to Iturbide's Empire of Mexico. When that collapsed in 1823, Guatemala and her neighbors formed the Central American Republic which itself collapsed amid recrimination and civil war. The Guatemala mint struck coins of the C.A.R. type 1824-47.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, .896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 69, Cal. 465.
