Aureo sale 242, lot 228
The specimen shown was lot 228 in Aureo y Calico sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 19,000 € (about $29,499 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Carlos IV (1788-1808). 1794. Guatemala. M. 8 escudos. Insignificantes golpecitos. Muy bella. Parte de brillo original. Muy rara y más así. EBC/EBC+. (Charles IV, 1788-1808, eight escudos of 1794, Guatemala mint. Tiny nicks, very handsome, some luster, very rare, extremely fine.)
Other dates of this type are known (1797, 1801) but all are rare. Guatemala is the rarest mint for colonial gold.
