Aureo sale 238, lot 78
This specimen was lot 78 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 900 euro (about US$1,427 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1789. Guatemala. M. 8 reales. Busto de Carlos III. Ordinal IV. Pátina irregular. Muy rara y más así. EBC-. (eight reales of 1789, Guatemala mint, bust of Charles III but with ordinal "IV." Irregular toning, very rare, about extremely fine.)"
This transitional type (with the bust of Charles III but with the name of Charles IV) was struck 1789-90 and is rare.
