Gr Britain SB816-20607r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20607 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GREAT BRITAIN. 1/2 Guinea, 1779. George III (1760-1820). NGC MS-62. Fourth portrait with hair on both shoulders. A high grade bright canary yellow example free of tone and with a bold strike." The bust of 1774 (Fr-360) must have displeased mint officials as it was replaced before 1775 was over by this portrait. The guinea did not suffer a similar blunder.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare.

Specification: 4.17 g, .917 fine gold, .123 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: S-3734; Fr-361; KM-605.
